Summer Workshop 2010

July 12, 2010 - July 16, 2010

Teachers and students will assemble detectors and performed four experiments using cosmic ray counters: muon lifetime, muon speed and cosmic rate rates versus atmospheric pressure. All students will present their results in talks to the whole group to close the workshop.

National Air and Space Museum visit for National Lab Day

UIC QuarkNet joined 4 high school groups at the Smithsonian Museum, operating their 4 QuarkNet detectors on May 5-6th in order to celebrate national lab day. We collected data at NASM as well as many sites throughout the country.

At NASM, we had a visit from our Illinois Congressman Bill Foster and the Bartlett High School group also visited his office. Data was collected to measure the rate of simultaneous muon hits are two arrays separated by 28m - 8 events per hour. Single muon rates were approximately 10 HZ and 2-muon rates from one array was around 1 Hz. Notie our group in front of the Apollo 11 command module. Yes, and under Charles Lindberg's "the Spirit of St. Louis".
